Activity Summary

The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) was created by Ed Diener, Robert Emmons, Randy Larsen, and Sharon Griffin in 1985. Its primary purpose was to provide a brief assessment of an individual’s overall sense of life satisfaction (Pavot, 2008). Over time, this scale has evolved into a tool for subjectively measuring life satisfaction in the present moment, serving as a component of well-being and offering predictive insights into future mental health behaviors (Pavot, 2008).

Upon completing the assessments presented in this class for this assignment, I had mixed feelings about the potential outcomes. It is rewarding to learn more about oneself and to discover ways to enhance life and personal growth. The satisfaction survey yielded a score that exceeded my expectations. Three years ago, I was navigating a divorce, facing bankruptcy, and uncertain about how to manage monthly expenses after transitioning from two incomes to one. Today, I am not only surviving but thriving, able to meet my financial obligations and even save money. Home renovations are now a possibility, contributing to a greater sense of self within my environment. Pursuing further education to enhance my skills also adds to my overall satisfaction, as I am recognized as a reliable resource in my workplace. Entering a loving and supportive relationship has further solidified my sense of well-being. Before taking this scale, I often felt that life satisfaction was just out of reach; however, the SWLS helped illuminate the significant positive changes I have achieved in a relatively short time.

The final question on the scale prompts deeper reflection, as it brings forth the “what ifs” of life. While I have made poor decisions, I have also made positive ones. It would be inaccurate to claim that I have not paused to consider potential changes in my life. Reflecting on past mistakes has facilitated my personal growth, imparting critical life lessons and fostering greater patience and compassion. Every decision, whether good or bad, has contributed to my current circumstances.

Relationship to Positive Psychology

Positive psychology is the scientific and applied approach aimed at identifying individuals’ strengths and enhancing their positive functioning (Lopez et al., 2019). This field emphasizes both strengths and weaknesses, providing a more comprehensive view of psychological well-being. The SWLS poses questions in a positive manner while also encouraging additional contemplation that may reveal negative perspectives. This scale fosters reflection and exploration of areas that may be causing dissatisfaction in one’s life.

Application to Personal and Professional Issues

Positive psychology encompasses a holistic view, considering both positive and negative aspects of life. The SWLS encourages deeper introspection into areas of dissatisfaction. It has allowed me to recognize that the trajectory of my life is satisfactory and has fostered a sense of accomplishment. My journey toward self-improvement, enhancing my life, and positively impacting those around me is indeed progressing in the desired direction.
