Introduction

For decades, educators and professionals have questioned and researched the characteristics and factors that contribute to effective learning techniques. Identifying the various learning factors that enhance individual learning could significantly increase the likelihood of success during the learning process. Whether in a school, workplace, or home environment, recognizing the most effective learning style for a learner is crucial for achieving optimal results. While identifying and acknowledging specific learning styles is essential, catering to and adapting each style can be challenging, both in the classroom and online.

The Impact of Learning Styles

Individuals learn in diverse ways, whether through listening, observing, writing, participating, or questioning. These different learning styles impact learners in unique ways. Some individuals comprehend information better visually or auditorily, while others require a hands-on, sequential learning approach to fully grasp the material. It is vital for teachers, instructors, or facilitators to understand these differences, and it can be highly advantageous for learners to recognize their most effective learning style. By gaining insight into their personal learning preferences, learners can build confidence and optimize their educational experience (Truong, 2016). Once a learning style is identified, educational staff can better determine the most effective instructional methods to enhance the learning process (Kirschner, 2017).

The theory that each individual possesses a unique learning style is continually evolving. Some researchers argue that learning styles can change over a lifetime, while others believe that learners develop personalized styles based on their previous learning experiences (Xiao & Abdul Rahman, 2017). According to Truong (2016), the landscape of learning styles is complex, with over 70 different theories emerging in the past 30 years. Adapting a learning module or lesson to accommodate each distinct learning style is a challenging task, and educators strive to find impactful methods that cater to all types of learners. Whether the learner is a secondary school student, an entry-level employee, or a business professional, understanding individual learning styles can enhance the educational process and lead to more effective learning outcomes.

Research Methodology of Learning Styles Theory

The articles utilized in researching Learning Styles Theory were all related to impactful learning processes. While understanding and identifying learning styles can benefit individuals of all ages and learning types, not all researchers agree on the importance of learning styles in achieving efficient and effective learning. In a peer-reviewed article, Paul Kirschner (2017) questioned the validity and reliability of the tests used in learning styles research, citing numerous inconsistencies. Kirschner found that qualitative self-report surveys and questionnaires were the most common research methodologies for learning styles theories, which he deemed inaccurate and often ineffective (2017).

Traditional methods of measuring learning styles through surveys and questionnaires have also faced scrutiny from other researchers, who argue that the questions may be outdated or biased (Truong, 2016). Truong suggests that online testing could provide a more accurate assessment by allowing for a comprehensive analysis of an individual’s step-by-step learning process, offering a clearer picture of their true learning style (2016). A pilot research study indicated that personality traits, behaviors, and time constraints are all factors that contribute to a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s learning style (Xiao & Abdul Rahman, 2017). All the articles reviewed were relevant and appropriate for examining the effectiveness and relevance of learning styles theory.

Limitations and Strengths

In theory, it would be ideal for educators and facilitators to integrate each learning style into their teaching processes. However, the vast number of learning style theories makes it challenging to find an appropriate and efficient testing method in most settings. It would be highly beneficial if educators could tailor their instruction to accommodate each learner’s style, resulting in a more engaging and effective learning experience. While the learning styles theory offers numerous strengths for both teachers and learners, the time required for testing and the potential for evolving learning styles present limitations.

Summary and Conclusion

The notion that different learners have distinct learning preferences is not unfounded.

With the complexity of the human brain, it is not surprising that there would be different modes of teaching information to help the learner better understand the learning material. 

Throughout the learning process, it is essential for the learner to fully grasp the content in order to retain the information, which underscores the importance of identifying learning styles. Whether the learning style is auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or sequential, creating a more tailored learning environment can empower learners to succeed and foster a healthier relationship with the learning process overall. By incorporating various learning styles into a lesson or educational model, educators enhance the opportunity for learners to comprehend the material, benefiting both the learners and the educators.
