Current Situation:Emilio is nearing graduation from high school and preparing to live independently. However, he appears uncertain about his upcoming independence and may be experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression due to a recent breakup and the significant life changes associated with graduating and transitioning to college.
Stage of Life:Transitioning from adolescence to emerging adulthood.

Theory

Explain the theories you selected to apply to the case. Once you explain the theory in general, provide details about the stage for the person in the case you selected. Explain how the theory helps to understand their development and their situation.

Prompt Description 
Selected Theories:Psychosocial theory—examines the influence of social factors on an individual’s mind or behavior. Attachment theory—focuses on the relationships and bonds formed with parents, friends, romantic partners, or inanimate objects.
Stage Details:Emilio is in stage five of Erikson’s psychosocial theory, where adolescents develop a sense of self and begin to seek independence. However, this stage can also lead to confusion regarding self-identity. Emilio is experiencing separation anxiety.
How Theory Helps the Understanding of Development:Both psychosocial theory and attachment theory provide insight into Emilio’s emotional struggles. Initially, he was excited about graduating and attending college, but he later began to reconsider and expressed a desire to stay in the area and work like his friends. Emilio’s life is undergoing rapid changes, and the stress of transitioning into adulthood, along with the emotional fallout from his breakup, appears to be overwhelming him.

What the Professional Information or Research Says:During stage five (adolescence to early adulthood), individuals seek to form their identity and begin to distance themselves from their parents. This period often leads to conflicts and stress as parental influences wane and peer influences rise (Davies, 2018). Significant changes associated with emerging adulthood can result in a high prevalence of depressive episodes (Finan, Ohannessian, & Gordon, 2018). Distress and anxiety are common reactions during periods of separation (Peters, 2019).
How This Information Relates to the Case:Emilio is uncertain about his future and is becoming increasingly frustrated with his parents, preferring to align himself with his friends. He is exhibiting signs of aggression, frustration, and nervousness.
