Abstract

This paper outlines the initial stages of a case study designed for a consultation psychology course, detailing three objectives for professional development and consulting psychology while highlighting the significance of research within relevant journals. Additionally, a case study aimed at improving skills in the consulting psychology domain is presented.

My Consulting Goals and Aspirations

This course serves as a foundational element for my future career ambitions in consulting psychology. As I advance in my career, I intend to utilize my existing skills and incorporate the knowledge acquired from this course. It is crucial to articulate three goals for personal and professional development within consultation psychology. First, I aim to cultivate skill sets pertinent to this field, which will facilitate my future consulting efforts. Second, mastering the establishment of consulting contracts is essential, as emphasized by Block (2011). Finally, leveraging the results from my VIA character strengths survey—specifically humor, social intelligence, leadership, hope, and curiosity—will be vital in shaping my identity as an I/O psychologist.

Researching Relevant Articles

Effective research in pertinent articles is essential for a consultant. In exploring topics that align with my consulting goals, I came across an article by Pelletier (2020) that discusses the integration of theoretical approaches to enhance relationship building, ethical behavior, and authenticity—key components for an I/O consultant. This article also examines various leadership styles, offering valuable insights for future application.

Description of a Case Study

The case study centers on the development of a self-sustaining leadership program within the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City, addressing the issue of fragmented operations across its seven agencies. The objective is to establish a comprehensive leadership development program that encompasses all agencies under a unified initiative. With backing from organizational leadership and collaboration with frontline managers, the program aims to identify emerging leaders and provide additional training to current leadership teams, potentially benefiting over 70,000 employees.

Conclusion

Embarking on the path to becoming a professional consultant necessitates commitment and perseverance. I am thankful for the opportunity to apply my developing skills within the MTA and through my coursework. With the support of stakeholders and a commitment to continuous improvement, I am confident in my ability to succeed in the field of consulting psychology.
