The History of Nursing Education

Nursing education has progressed over the years, from the apprentice system of the pre-19th era to the execution of well-organized programs in higher-learning organizations. When nursing faculties were established in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the nurse educator role took on an extended history (McKenna et al., 2020). Developments in nursing education have produced a significant impact on nurse training and practice in several disciplines. Nurse educators’ responsibilities have expanded to encompass developing curricula, program assessments, and research (Smith et al., 2023). Nurse instructors prepare nursing students to face the challenges of a constantly changing medical system (Shorey et al., 2022). The paper summarizes five critical historical impacts on nurses and nursing education and trends that will shape nursing practice and education.

Five Historical Influences on Nursing

Several historical factors significantly impact the field of nursing education and practice. The American Civil War was a primary event that provided the groundwork for forming professional nursing in the United States. Before the conflict, many women were only engaged in house activities restricted to their houses. In the Civil War, many women contributed to offering nursing care to warriors, shaping society’s views on their significance in the medical field and the necessity for formal education and training (Hildebrand & Smith, 2022). Moreover, another event that influenced nursing education that is, in 1860, in London, Florence Nightingale founded a hospital- nursing school.

The incident assisted in establishing professional nursing training, the requirement of certificates for those who succeed in the program, and the development of new nursing organizations (McKenna et al., 2020).  Florence Nightingale shaped nursing as a profession based on evidence and research. This legacy has impacted nursing education by emphasizing analytical thinking, inquiry, and the development of clinical skills (Saleva & Yankulovska, 2022). Another significant historical event is, in1911 the formation of the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANA is crucial for establishing guidelines for nursing practice and education and improving the nursing standards of care. The ANA plays a significant role in promoting the rights and autonomy of nurses and patients (Jurns, 2019).

Other events, for instance, recent healthcare technological advancements, such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and telehealth, have significantly impacted nursing care and education. These technological advancements have influenced the interaction of nurses with their patients and other healthcare workers (Huang et al., 2021). Furthermore, the COVID-19 epidemic has affected nursing practice and education. The pandemic has highlighted the necessity of nursing education and training programs that prepare nurses to react appropriately to medical emergencies. The acceptance of novel innovations and patient care methods during emergencies significantly impacts nursing care (Agu et al., 2021).

The historical events have significantly influenced nursing practice and education. The Civil War empowered women by establishing the nursing profession. Florence Nightingale’s commitment to research-based strategies and practice encourages analytical thinking, investigation, and professional learning, improving patient care (Saleva & Yankulovska, 2022). The ANA has enhanced educational and practice standards, enabling patients to receive reliable and efficient care (Jurns, 2019). The incorporation of healthcare technology has improved nurses’ performance in patient care. The COVID-19 event underscored nursing’s vital function and promoted novel innovations, significantly impacting nursing (Agu et al., 2021).

Impact of Three Trends on Nursing

Numerous trends influence the prospects of nursing practice and nursing education. Performing effectively in interdisciplinary teams has become crucial in nursing. Multidisciplinary training, education, and teamwork are essential for efficient, patient-centered treatment. Training in collaboration and communication, interpersonal abilities, and comprehending the roles of medical personnel are critical for improving nursing practice (Zenani et al., 2023). The second trend is an increasing demand for prevention, security, and patient self-management, which necessitates teamwork in nursing practice so that patients acquire assistance and valuable advantages.

Its impact underlies the historical basis of systemic nursing practice, which necessitates further education and training for nurses (Sumpter et al., 2022). The third trend is the demand for equal medical care for all populations, necessitating culturally appropriate nursing education, training, and practice. These developments significantly influence future nursing practice and education. Nurses’ training and education programs need to adopt these developments to appropriately prepare nurses for an evolving medical environment and enable them to offer culturally competent care (Messoudi et al., 2023).

Nursing history is directly connected to current nursing practice and education advancements. Nursing has historically been a profession of development and evolution. Nursing always needs to adapt to advancements, from the Civil War, Florence Nightingale, and the COVID-19 pandemic’s foundation of current nursing to the establishment of nursing organizations and overcoming barriers to heterogeneity. The adoption of technology, the emphasis on population health, and the necessity for collaboration and interprofessional training are recent innovations influencing nursing’s continuous growth (Zenani et al., 2023). To ensure that nurses have the skills to deliver reliable, effective, and personalized treatment in a medical system that is becoming more advanced and evolving rapidly, nursing education will rely on previous experiences acquired to meet future issues (Messoudi et al., 2023).

Conclusion

Nursing’s historical evolution and current nursing and nursing education innovations have significantly impacted the profession’s future. Nursing education programs must prepare nurses to face future challenges by integrating new technology and promoting inter-professional training and collaboration. It will improve the nurse’s skills in providing efficient care to patients.
