Leadership Styles Application

The role of leadership in healthcare is pivotal, influencing care quality and patient outcomes. Leaders manage workflows, enhance employee satisfaction, and foster positive cultures. Effective leadership in healthcare requires informed decision-making and proactive planning (Cummings et al., 2021).

Case Study

In a challenging scenario, Marty, an experienced African American healthcare worker, faces work-related issues due to caring responsibilities for her mother with dementia. Despite being on Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), concerns about punctuality and work patterns have arisen among colleagues (Cummings et al., 2021).

Relevant Leadership Styles and Practices

Key leadership styles in healthcare include democratic, transactional, and transformative. Democratic leadership involves inclusive decision-making, while transactional focuses on tasks and rewards. Transformative leadership inspires change and builds trust, enhancing team performance and motivation (Robbins & Davidhizar, 2020; Richards, 2020; Oliveira et al., 2020).

Leadership Style Applicable in the Case Study

Given Marty’s situation, a transformative leadership style is suitable. It can address her challenges, motivate the team, and build trust through open communication about her needs (Richards, 2020).

Positive and Negative Implications

Implementing transformative leadership fosters a positive work culture but requires monitoring for stress. Democratic leadership can engage employees but may demand extensive time and patience (Nawaz & Khan, 2020; Holmgren et al., 2019; Oliveira et al., 2020).
