Thyroid scintigraphy when antibody testing is inconclusive or when an autonomous thyroid nodule is suspected

Methimazole is the preferred and only approved antithyroid medication commonly recommended for children with hyperthyroidism. It works by reducing thyroid hormone production and helping restore normal thyroid function.

Propylthiouracil (PTU) is generally avoided in children because of the increased risk of severe liver injury, including potentially life-threatening hepatic failure.
