This population faces significant health risks and disparities due to systemic barriers. Socioeconomic disadvantages, including poverty and limited education, restrict access to essential resources such as nutritious food and transportation. Limited accessibility in healthcare facilities results in delayed diagnosis and suboptimal treatment, which negatively impacts health outcomes (CDC, 2020). Additionally, healthcare discrimination and stigma cause reluctance to seek medical care, leading to disparities in treatment quality. As a result, individuals with disabilities experience higher rates of chronic conditions, mental health challenges, and secondary health complications (Dixon-Ibarra & Horner-Johnson, 2014).

Intervention Proposal

A crucial national initiative addressing health disparities among individuals with disabilities is the Healthy People initiative. This program establishes objectives to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, including individuals with disabilities, by setting goals to improve healthcare access, reduce health disparities, and promote social inclusion (CDC, 2020).

To address these disparities, advanced practice nurses (APNs) can collaborate at the local, state, and national levels to advocate for policies that improve healthcare accessibility and equity for individuals with disabilities. One proposed strategy is engaging in policy advocacy by working with lawmakers and healthcare organizations to implement inclusive healthcare policies that reduce barriers to care and enhance accessibility. Additionally, APNs can participate in community-based interventions by developing educational programs that address stigma and promote disability-inclusive healthcare practices (Disability and Health Disability Barriers, 2020).

Collaboration with key stakeholders is essential to advancing these health equity goals. APNs can partner with healthcare providers, policymakers, community organizations, and advocacy groups to address the unique needs of individuals with disabilities.
