NR-537: Assessment & Evaluation in Education

As the mentor, I would begin by congratulating the educator on the learners’ perfect scores, recognizing their achievements. Course evaluation is a critical process that reflects the learners’ performance and the overall quality of the course. Tan et al. (2018) emphasize that course evaluation is crucial for assessing course outcomes and determining if students have successfully achieved the intended learning objectives. In an academic setting, I would guide the educator to evaluate individual learner performance through clinical observations, assignments, and examination scores. These tools provide a holistic view of whether the learners have met course outcomes, as demonstrated by their perfect scores. Consistent achievement across courses would indicate that students have acquired the knowledge, skills, and behaviors aligned with BSN Essentials and program outcomes.
In addition to individual assessment, other evaluation techniques such as learner outcome assessments, course outcome assessments, and program outcome evaluations can provide deeper insights. Learner outcome assessments determine if students have met program-level goals, while course outcome assessments focus on how effectively the course objectives were met. Program outcomes emphasize individual competencies in knowledge, skills, and behaviors, often measured through test scores or practical observations (Hicks & Patterson, 2017). However, it is important to note that while course outcomes derive from program outcomes, not all program outcomes must align with each course. This distinction should be carefully considered during evaluations (Oermann & Gaberson, 2017).
Moreover, engaging learners in discussions about the course can reveal valuable insights. While their perfect scores may indicate academic success, they could also mask conceptual struggles or reliance on external aids such as online resources. Understanding their perspectives on the course content, learning activities, and instructional methods can help determine whether the perfect scores truly reflect comprehensive knowledge or surface-level preparation. These insights can guide improvements in course design and delivery to ensure learners develop both theoretical and practical competencies.
