Professional organizations play a vital role in shaping the ethos and values of a profession. They create a professional culture by advocating for their members, promoting core values, and offering opportunities for continuous education and development. This is evident in the nursing profession, where professional organizations have been instrumental in fostering a sense of community and professional growth. For instance, these organizations advocate for nurses, provide opportunities to connect with colleagues, and offer resources like educational journals and certifications (Matthews, 2012). The nursing field is supported by a rich history of professional organizations, starting with the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses, founded in 1893, now known as the National League for Nursing. Other prominent organizations include the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Red Cross, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, State Nursing Associations, and the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA).
The National Student Nurses Association (NSNA), established in 1969, has been a valuable resource for nursing students. It provides career resources, educational journals, and opportunities for professional networking. As a current member, I find it helpful in my journey as a student nurse. Looking ahead, I aim to join the American Nurses Association (ANA), which is the largest nursing organization in the U.S. The ANA offers resources such as an extensive online library, free access to nursing journals, and opportunities to network with experienced professionals. Membership in ANA will enhance my resume and provide career advancement opportunities, especially as I continue seeking better employment prospects (Matthews, 2012).
In terms of certifications, I am considering pursuing two: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). A CRNA certification allows nurses to administer anesthesia during surgical procedures and is regulated by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. On the other hand, the CCRP certification applies to medical and clinical research professionals, requiring a background in nursing, medical technology, or related fields. Pursuing these certifications aligns with my future goals of advancing my education and securing greater career opportunities. Obtaining a graduate degree in nursing or a related field will meet the requirements for these certifications and position me for success in the healthcare industry.
