The first part of this project involves collecting community data. Miami City is an urban area and the headquarters of Miami-Dade County, which serves as an economic and cultural hub in Florida. The city has seen a growing number of teenagers facing mental health issues, many of which are linked to alcohol abuse. The population of Miami City stands at 2,761,581, and it is characterized by its urban nature.
The demographic data for Miami City shows the following distribution:

In terms of housing, the median value of an owner-occupied home is $292,900, with a median selected cost of $1,933. The percentage of people under 65 years with a disability stands at 7.1%, and 25.3% of the population under 65 lacks health insurance.
The epidemiological data, based on rankings from County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, shows that the health outcomes for Miami City reflect some concerning statistics. The premature death rate is 5300, and adult obesity affects 22% of the population. Additionally, the rate of alcohol-impaired deaths in Miami is 12%, compared to 23% in the state. However, Miami’s youth birth rate is better than the state average, with a lower rate of 17 compared to 21 in the state.
Substance use data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reveals that in Miami, the percentage of people engaging in tobacco use is 37.5%, slightly lower than the national average of 42.6%. The rates for marijuana use and alcohol use disorder in Miami are also slightly lower than the national averages, at 34.3% versus 33.0% for marijuana use and 9.9% versus 11.0% for alcohol use disorder, respectively.
The windshield survey identifies several key observations related to the community’s population. Some pregnant women, infants, and young children were seen, but there were fewer signs of older adults or those with visible physical disabilities. There were also a number of people who appeared to be physically fit, though obesity was prevalent among many in the community. Regarding social and economic conditions, many public housing units and areas with public transit were observed. Health resources included a significant number of community clinics and skilled nursing facilities, but fewer mental health or substance abuse treatment centers were available.
Based on the data collected, one of the key health problems in Miami City is related to alcohol use, particularly among adolescents. This issue is further emphasized by the community’s epidemiological data, which reveals a concerning rate of alcohol use disorders among the population.
The vulnerable population most affected by alcohol use in Miami is teenagers. This group is particularly susceptible to mental health issues linked to alcohol use, including depression and suicidal tendencies.
The nursing diagnosis for this issue is: Increased risk of mental health problems among adolescents related to alcohol use as demonstrated by depression and suicidal thoughts in the community’s youth population.
