Research in nursing is essential for developing evidence-based practices that improve patient care. By conducting research, nurses can correct misconceptions, implement updated treatment protocols, and continually enhance the quality of healthcare. It ensures that nurses remain informed about changes in healthcare policies, environments, and patient demographics.
It is important for professional nurses to understand the basic principles of research, as these principles guide them in conducting relevant studies within their specialties. This knowledge enables nurses to apply research findings effectively, discontinue outdated practices, and improve organizational performance and patient care (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017).
This course is pivotal in equipping nursing students with the necessary skills to apply research and evidence-based practices in their daily roles. This preparation is crucial for their professional growth and development (Ellis, 2018).
Quantitative research involves the collection and analysis of numerical data to identify patterns, averages, and relationships. I learned that this approach is based on deductive reasoning, where data is gathered to test hypotheses, and the results are generalized to larger populations (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017).
One quantitative research design I learned about is the quasi-experimental design. I found it helpful to understand this design as it does not include control groups, setting it apart from true experimental designs.
Quasi-experimental research plays a critical role in assessing the impact of interventions on specific populations. It forms the foundation of evidence-based nursing, providing insights that can directly improve healthcare protocols and patient care (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017).
Qualitative research focuses on non-numerical data and aims to understand individuals’ experiences, opinions, and perceptions. I learned that this type of research allows nurses to gain a deeper understanding of human experiences in their everyday contexts.
One qualitative research design I encountered is phenomenology, which seeks to describe experiences from the perspective of participants. The design became clear to me because it emphasizes the significance of lived experiences (Nieswiadomy & Bailey, 2018).
Phenomenological research is particularly important for nursing as it uncovers patients’ lived experiences and contributes to the development of knowledge that can address nursing practice challenges (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017).
Sampling involves selecting a representative subset of a population to draw conclusions about the entire population. In nursing research, sampling is crucial as it enables researchers to study populations efficiently within limited time and resource constraints (Nieswiadomy & Bailey, 2018).
One sampling strategy used in quantitative research is simple random sampling. This method ensures that every unit in the population has an equal chance of being selected, thus eliminating bias (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017).
Another sampling technique is stratified random sampling, which involves dividing the population into subgroups based on specific attributes such as age or gender. This ensures a more representative sample, improving the accuracy and reliability of research findings (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2017).
Research contributes to nursing practice by providing evidence-based protocols that guide decision-making, reduce the risk of medical errors, and improve patient safety (Nieswiadomy & Bailey, 2018).
One way research has impacted nursing practice is through the development of protocols and guidelines based on scientific evidence, leading to improved clinical outcomes.
Research is essential in building an evidence-based nursing profession, which emphasizes using the best available evidence to enhance patient outcomes and ensure clinician safety (Nieswiadomy & Bailey, 2018).
As a future pediatric nurse, I plan to apply evidence-based practices to improve the health outcomes of children and maintain a safe clinical environment.
This course has provided me with the skills and knowledge needed to practice evidence-based care while contributing to the field of nursing research (Ellis, 2018).
Completing the clarifying research worksheet has reinforced the importance of research in nursing and reminded me that research is the foundation of nursing practice.
