L.S. is a 23-year-old Caucasian woman, born on February 4, 1993, in Baltimore, Maryland. English is her primary language, although she possesses a basic understanding of Spanish. L.S. completed her high school education in 2011 and currently resides in Salisbury. She is balancing her studies with a part-time job as a veterinary receptionist/technician. L.S. lives with her boyfriend and his parents while saving money to eventually move out on her own. She has reported experiencing frequent headaches.
L.S. acknowledges that she is overweight but is actively taking steps to improve her physical health. She is conscious of her dietary habits and has incorporated running into her routine to train for an upcoming marathon. Although she considers herself overweight, L.S. generally views her health as being in good condition and remains focused on maintaining her health regimen to prepare for the marathon scheduled in the upcoming months.
L.S. drinks alcohol occasionally, mainly on weekends when she is not working, and is a non-smoker. She has not been hospitalized for any major health issues. However, she was diagnosed with shin splints during her high school years due to her involvement in soccer. For her frequent headaches, L.S. takes 200 mg of Ibuprofen as needed for pain relief.
Paternal Grandparents:Â Both of L.S.’s paternal grandparents completed high school. Her grandfather, a retired firefighter, was diagnosed with diabetes at age 73 and suffered a heart attack at age 75. Her grandmother, also retired, underwent spinal surgery in 2015 but is in otherwise good health.
Maternal Grandparents:Â Both maternal grandparents are deceased. They were also high school graduates. Her grandmother smoked until the age of 25 and died of lung cancer, which was exacerbated by poor circulation. Her grandfather was a Navy Seaman and a heavy drinker who passed away from bladder and prostate cancer.
Parents and Siblings: L.S.’s mother holds a Bachelor’s Degree and works as an IT Manager at the U.S. Census Bureau. She has no significant health issues. L.S.’s father holds a Bachelor’s Degree and works as an IT Specialist with the Department of Defense. He suffers from hypertension, obesity, pre-diabetes, migraines, and chronic sinusitis. One of L.S.’s brothers had a heart attack at age 41, followed by diagnoses of colon and liver cancer at age 58. Another brother has type 2 diabetes.
The interview with L.S. was conducted at a local coffee shop, which provided a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for the conversation. L.S. appeared at ease and was open in her responses, making the interaction smooth. While I initially felt nervous, I was able to use my preparation and knowledge from the class to effectively guide the conversation. The coffee shop setting allowed us to establish rapport and trust, enabling L.S. to feel comfortable sharing her health history. Although I gathered all the necessary information, I noticed I relied on closed-ended questions more than anticipated. In future interviews, I plan to incorporate more open-ended questions to encourage deeper discussions.
The interview with L.S. was both insightful and engaging. Conducted in a relaxed coffee shop environment, L.S. felt comfortable, which contributed to the openness of our conversation. Although I experienced some initial nervousness, organizing my questions and applying the knowledge from class helped the interview run smoothly. The rapport we established in the coffee shop fostered trust, which facilitated effective communication. I recognize that future interviews might not unfold as easily and will be prepared to adapt accordingly. Additionally, I found myself relying on closed-ended questions more than intended and plan to focus on using open-ended questions in future interviews to encourage more comprehensive responses. After the interview, I recommended that L.S. seek additional information regarding diabetes and nutritional values. She expressed genuine interest in learning more about these topics to support her long-term health.
