Reflection Questions

1. What kind of group does Tom discuss that can determine your success or failure?

Tom discusses the concept of reference groups and how they play a pivotal role in determining one’s success or failure. According to him, our social connections and the quality of our relationships greatly influence our overall happiness and health. I completely agree with Tom’s perspective because surrounding oneself with the wrong reference group can lead to detrimental outcomes. He also emphasizes that “you will become the combined average of the people you spend the most time with.” This highlights the importance of choosing your social circle wisely to ensure personal growth and achievement.

2. How many people does he suggest to hang around, and what are the three areas you and your “people” will experience together?

Tom suggests that individuals should spend time with an average of five people who will collectively influence three key areas of life: health, attitude, and income. These aspects of life are interconnected, and the influence of the people we associate with often determines the trajectory of our personal and professional well-being. By consciously selecting a positive and supportive group of individuals, one can cultivate growth in these three essential areas.

3. Do you think you can identify your “people” that you spend most of your time with?

Yes, I can easily identify the people I spend most of my time with: my parents, my boyfriend Felipe, and my siblings Juan, Carlos, and Maria. My mom, in particular, has been a constant presence since my dad is currently on vacation in Mexico. My parents have always provided a stable environment and support system, ensuring that my siblings and I have a roof over our heads. Financially, they are quick to assist whenever I encounter struggles, though this is rare.

Felipe, my boyfriend, is another vital part of my support system. He keeps me calm and grounded, often serving as the optimistic one in our relationship. My siblings also contribute to my life in meaningful ways, helping me whenever they can. Among all of them, my parents stand out as my greatest motivators. They encourage me to stay focused on my career goals and have been instrumental in my decision to return to school. I am incredibly thankful for their unwavering support and guidance, as they remain my biggest fans.
