Successful leaders must be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to lead themselves and others effectively. They must be adaptable and utilize various leadership techniques to overcome challenges. A leader who recognizes their strengths and weaknesses can motivate others to reach their full potential and continually seek self-improvement. Additionally, good leaders foster teamwork, prioritize their group’s welfare, and encourage innovation. This paper will discuss my strengths and weaknesses as a leader, alongside the results of leadership assessments I have completed.
To better understand my strengths, I interviewed three co-workers, asking them questions such as “Who am I at my best?” and “Can you provide an example of a time when I was at my best?” Their responses highlighted several of my strengths, including problem-solving skills, commitment, honesty, and helpfulness. I was also commended for listening well to others’ advice and considering their perspectives when solving problems. According to the “Communication Style Self-Assessment,” I tend to have an analytical style, preferring to gather ample information before making decisions. The VIA character strengths survey identified my core strengths as honesty, love, spirituality, love of learning, and perseverance (VIA, n.d.). As a leader, honesty is essential; without trust, team members may hesitate to seek guidance. A leader must possess a range of skills, not just one, to be effective.
I aim to be a leader that my team respects and looks up to—someone they feel comfortable approaching with problems. My goal is to create an environment where my team can grow and collaborate, knowing that they were hired not to be bossed around but to contribute creatively. I also strive to provide non-judgmental, constructive feedback that inspires improvement.
One area for growth is developing more self-confidence. I tend to second-guess my decisions, fearing failure or incorrect solutions. However, I have been focusing on building my confidence and trusting my abilities. Additionally, I need to allow my team to explore solutions on their own, rather than stepping in prematurely. I believe my problem-solving skills and commitment will help guide my team, as these qualities work together to achieve successful outcomes. By learning to trust my instincts and focusing on what I’ve accomplished, I can overcome my confidence issues.
