This process helps in identifying both the areas where the organization excels and those requiring enhancement. As Martin (2018) explains, strategic planning is inherently proactive, enabling all stakeholders to understand the ultimate goals and anticipate potential challenges. This discussion centers on a specific challenge within strategic planning—labor shortages—and explores possible solutions.
The primary issue confronting many organizations, particularly in healthcare, is labor shortages. This problem is especially acute at Hackensack Meridian Health, where workforce deficits are impacting service delivery. The healthcare sector is experiencing increased shortages due to multiple factors, including workforce burnout, an aging employee base, and lasting effects from the Covid-19 pandemic (The University of Southern California, 2022). Furthermore, Gardner (2022) highlights the concerning trend of nurses refusing Covid-19 vaccinations, which affects workforce availability and safety. Hackensack Meridian Health aims to transform healthcare by serving as an agent of positive change. Its vision focuses on providing patient-centered care that is accessible, affordable, and high in quality. The organization’s core value is to consistently prioritize superior patient care. However, these goals face serious obstacles due to the ongoing labor shortages, which threaten the ability to deliver on these commitments effectively.
Addressing labor shortages in healthcare is critical to maintaining both organizational viability and patient safety. Despite these strengths, Hackensack Meridian Health faces challenges such as long patient wait times and high staff turnover rates. There are clear opportunities to improve by attracting skilled personnel through incentives like sign-on bonuses. Additionally, improving cost-efficiency can help reduce patient dissatisfaction related to long waits. By emphasizing employee benefits and refining care delivery to be more cost-effective, the organization can strengthen its appeal to both patients and prospective staff.
External threats include negative patient experiences and fierce competition for skilled healthcare workers. Poor patient feedback can damage the organization’s reputation, while intensified competition makes staff retention increasingly difficult. To combat these threats, efforts must be made to enhance patient satisfaction and develop strategies that encourage workforce loyalty and reduce turnover.
Strategic planning is essential for guiding an organization’s path and identifying areas that require development. Labor shortages represent a significant hurdle, especially in healthcare, necessitating continuous innovation and effective problem-solving. By proactively addressing these challenges, organizations like Hackensack Meridian Health can lessen the adverse effects on patient care and overall performance.
