According to the course material, an effective leader embodies presence, mindfulness, social and emotional intelligence, and leads by caring. Being fully present for those you lead is essential so they can learn from your example. Mindfulness enhances this presence by ensuring your mind remains clear and focused during interactions. Social and emotional intelligence, paired with a leadership style based on caring, helps followers feel valued both in their work and as individuals. These qualities foster trust and motivation within a team.
From my perspective, authentic leadership is best exemplified by individuals who maintain clear goals and self-discipline, uphold steadfast values, and exhibit a strong sense of purpose or passion in their work. These elements create a foundation for genuine leadership that inspires others through consistent actions and integrity (Western Governors University [WGU], 2020).
This was my first experience creating a LinkedIn account. Although I was aware of LinkedIn’s purpose, I was initially unsure how it could benefit me professionally. I chose a smiling profile picture because it conveys approachability and friendliness, which are crucial for making positive first impressions. Additionally, I included my school information to connect with other MSN nurses who could offer advice and share their experiences with the MSN program. This step helped me create a network aligned with my career goals.
Social and emotional intelligence (SEI) refers to the ability to understand and manage your emotions while effectively interacting with others. I realized that I naturally use these skills daily, often without conscious effort. By continuing to develop SEI, I can improve patient care and contribute to a positive work environment. For example, active listening ensures patients and colleagues feel heard and respected, fostering trust and collaboration. Incorporating these skills into both professional and personal settings enriches relationships and enhances communication (WGU, n.d.).
| SEI Power Skill | Skill Sets | Example Scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Self-awareness | Mindfulness, Patience | Mindfulness helped me show compassion when calming a patient fearful of an IV due to past negative experiences. |
| Self-management | Stress management, Self-care | After a stressful workday, I managed stress by talking with my husband and practiced self-care by taking a bath. |
| Interpersonal Communication | Compassion, Active listening | I demonstrated concern and actively listened to a patient’s fears about an IV, which helped build trust. |
| Executive Function | Adaptability, Problem-solving | I resolved a conflict between a nurse and patient by adjusting room assignments to improve patient comfort. |
| Social Awareness | Perspective taking, Cultural awareness | I respected a patient’s cultural preference for an all-female care team, ensuring her comfort during a procedure. |
Mindfulness and patience are vital daily when working with patients, especially those who may have fears or anxiety about medical procedures. Stress management and self-care are critical to maintaining personal well-being after demanding shifts, helping prevent burnout. Compassion and active listening strengthen the nurse-patient relationship, improving patient satisfaction and outcomes. Adaptability and problem-solving skills enable nurses to navigate conflicts and ensure patient-centered care. Cultural awareness fosters respect and comfort for patients’ unique needs, reinforcing inclusive and sensitive healthcare delivery.
Studying SEI has heightened my awareness of how these skills enhance my effectiveness as a nurse. I intend to continue developing these competencies to ensure patients receive the best possible care experience. Moreover, by modeling SEI behaviors, I can influence colleagues positively, promoting a supportive and empathetic workplace culture.
