The overuse and misuse of antibiotics are causing the existing and emerging global health crisis of antibiotic resistance. This problem is a great threat to public health and should be dealt with urgently. In this paper, research skills are used to discover evidence-based resources and an annotated bibliography outlining the issue of antibiotic resistance in modern healthcare and some potential solutions to this.

Overview of the Healthcare Issue

Antibiotic resistance is a serious health care problem because when bacteria are resistant to the effects of antibiotics, infections become harder to treat. This problem, therefore, leads to longer hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and increased mortality. Because drug-resistant infections are a concern in healthcare settings, it is of particular concern because they can result in complications in vulnerable patients (Ahmed et al., 2024). Antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention strategies have come to the fore due to growing concerns about antibiotic resistance. The role of healthcare professionals, especially nurses, in addressing this issue is to educate the patient, follow infection control protocols, and support responsible antibiotic use. 

Nurses frequently witness the consequences of antibiotic resistance, particularly in healthcare settings where hospital-acquired infections contribute to prolonged recovery times and inadequate treatment outcomes. This issue has significant implications for patient outcomes, infection control, and treatment protocols. Effective antimicrobial stewardship, patient education on appropriate antibiotic use, and infection prevention strategies are essential components of nursing advocacy (Bonacaro et al., 2024). Collaboration among healthcare professionals is necessary to ensure the responsible use of antibiotics and to preserve their effectiveness in combating resistant infections. It emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in mitigating antibiotic resistance through evidence-based interventions. 

Discussion of Research

Systematically applying library research skills to identify the appropriate journal articles on antibiotic resistance. To search articles related to the antibiotic resitance in Capella University Library, keywords used were “antibiotic resistance”, “antimicrobial stewardship”, “infection control”, “drug resistant infections,” and “healthcare associated infections.” Using the keywords helped identify studies addressing causes, impacts, and interventions. The study was searched in reputable databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, which provide access to high-quality academic sources. Peer-reviewed journal articles published in the last 5 years with data-based evidence of the cause, impact, and intervention of antibiotic resistance were selected as the studies. The selected databases, provided peer-reviewed, data-driven research essential for evidence-based analysis. 

Filtering for recent publications (last five years) ensured up-to-date findings. The chosen articles were found in these databases because they offer access to scholarly journals and clinical studies, making them reliable sources for understanding antibiotic resistance trends, prevention strategies, and healthcare implications. The articles were chosen because the information from all sources was provided that helped with understanding the growing concern of antibiotic resistance, the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in healthcare settings, and ways to reduce antibiotic misuse. These articles provided useful points of view that assist in justifying evidence-based interventions to prevent antibiotic resistance in clinical practice.

The selected sources were checked to see if they were credible using the CRAAP criteria (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose) (Muis et al., 2022). That way, the currency contained only the recent (2020–2024) publications. The chosen peer-reviewed journal articles were directly related to antibiotic resistance. The authors’ credentials and affiliations with well-known institutions were verified so that we can be sure of their authority. The information was found to be evidence-based, cited credible references, and peer-reviewed to be accurate. To ensure objectivity and unbiased work, each source was analyzed to see what the purpose of the source was. The sources could be used in the research without any doubt.

As an institution focusing on policy development and healthcare practices, it is a valuable resource for learning how institutions can develop effective stewardship programs to address this growing issue, thus included in the bibliography.

Summary

By developing this annotated bibliography, I gained a deeper understanding of the complexity of antimicrobial resistance and the urgent need for global intervention. Examining and reviewing peer-reviewed articles confirmed that various factors contribute to AMR, such as the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in health care and agriculture. I learned that antibacterial stewardship applications, different interchangeable treatment approaches, and stricter policies controlling antimicrobial use are crucial to slow wellness. In addition, the lack of new antibiotic development is a major challenge, and prevention and appropriate antibiotic management have become even more important.

At the same time, this process furthered my skill in critically evaluating scholarly sources using the CRAAP criteria, including currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. To improve my ability to identify patterns in research and write a well-supported discussion on AMR, I synthesized key findings from multiple sources. In general, this experience has benefited my research and analytical skills and the relevance of evidence-based approaches to the resolution of health care challenges.
