Mindfulness Reflection on Mindset

Tom’s discussion on the differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset highlights the importance of personal perspective in learning and growth. Personally, I identify as someone with a growth mindset. I firmly believe that while people may begin with a baseline mindset, personal growth requires believing in oneself. Without self-belief, improving skills and achieving goals becomes nearly impossible. A fixed mindset can create barriers, particularly when learning new skills or engaging in tasks that do not come naturally. This mindset makes embracing challenges more difficult and limits one’s ability to improve.

When considering the context of nursing school and professional practice, I believe it is much easier to succeed with a growth mindset. Nursing school presents numerous challenges, and as Tom mentions in the video, individuals with fixed mindsets often avoid difficult tasks to minimize the risk of failure. This avoidance hinders progress and development, making it difficult to thrive in such a demanding field. In contrast, a growth mindset encourages individuals to embrace challenges, allowing the brain to develop new ways to approach problems. Nursing is a field filled with unpredictable and complex situations, so adopting a growth mindset makes navigating these challenges more manageable and ensures continued professional growth.
