During my pursuit of earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I developed a new and intriguing goal of becoming a research assistant. As I progressed through my courses, I became increasingly interested in the research associated with my assessments. This interest grew stronger as I neared the completion of my program. With only a few courses remaining, I decided to explore what it entails to become a research assistant, focusing on the type of research facility I would like to work for, such as a university research department, a research center, or a private research organization. I also aimed to understand the primary job functions of a research assistant, including the specific computer programs used.

A significant challenge I face is gaining a deeper understanding of data analytics in research studies, particularly Big Data Analytics. This involves learning about new algorithms, methodologies, systems, and applications, as I aspire to join a large research team. Big Data is significantly impacting daily life by integrating and analyzing diverse data to support decision-making. Applications of Big Data include, but are not limited to, health and well-being, policy-making, and new online educational models like MOOCs and Student-Teacher Modeling (Yang & Cao, 2021).

Psychologists identify two types of human motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation involves being driven by rewards such as money, success, or recognition. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is driven by personal satisfaction, independence, or genuine interest in the task (Lopez-Garrido, 2021).Both extrinsic and intrinsic factors influence my motivation to become a research assistant. Extrinsic factors include the higher pay rate and the potential for recognition that this career path offers. Intrinsic factors involve my curiosity and interest in research and the potential to inspire my grown children, aged 19 and 23, to pursue their academic and professional goals. I believe I am more intrinsically motivated, though extrinsic factors also play a role.

According to the article “Role of the Big Five Personality Traits and Motivation in Predicting Performance in Collaborative Presentations,” individuals high in extraversion have an advantage in oral communications, while those high in conscientiousness and agreeableness are strong contributors in team environments (Kelsen & Liang, 2018). With my Big Five Personality Traits showing 83% in openness, 73% in conscientiousness, 90% in extraversion, 90% in agreeableness, and 48% in neuroticism, I believe my intrinsic and extrinsic motivations will support my goal. My openness to new ideas, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and balanced neuroticism will enable me to contribute effectively as a research assistant and achieve success in the field.

The self-determination theory suggests that individuals become self-determined when their needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are met. Intrinsic motivation is central to this theory. It posits that people need to feel in control of their behaviors and goals, master tasks, learn new skills, and experience a sense of belonging. Applying this theory to my goal of becoming a research assistant, I will be able to continue pursuing this career because it will meet these needs.

This information supports my personal and professional development by providing insights into staying motivated and focused on tasks. Understanding the Big Five Personality Traits helps me apply my characteristics towards my goal as a research assistant. Knowledge about Big Data Analytics and new methodologies will aid in acquiring up-to-date technological skills, enhancing my candidacy for research teams.
