Despite these adjustments, many healthcare professionals remained concerned about workplace exposure, delayed symptom onset, and the possibility of transmitting infections to vulnerable patients.
As an emergency room nurse with a decade of clinical experience, I have witnessed the physical, emotional, and professional challenges healthcare workers endured during the COVID-19 crisis. Staffing shortages, extended work hours, emotional fatigue, and burnout became common across healthcare settings. Returning healthcare professionals to patient care shortly after workplace exposure without consistent access to timely diagnostic testing often increased anxiety and uncertainty, particularly because individuals may remain asymptomatic during the early stages of infection.
One practical policy improvement would be expanding employer-funded Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing following documented workplace exposure. PCR testing remains one of the most accurate diagnostic methods for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection and supports earlier identification of infected healthcare workers (CDC, 2020). Increased testing availability would enable healthcare organizations to make evidence-based decisions regarding isolation requirements, return-to-work timelines, staffing management, and infection control strategies.
Although implementing expanded PCR testing programs would require additional financial investment, many healthcare organizations already possess laboratory infrastructure capable of supporting increased testing capacity. The primary costs would involve testing supplies, laboratory personnel, and operational resources. However, these expenditures may be offset by preventing workplace outbreaks, reducing employee illness, minimizing staffing shortages, and avoiding unnecessary compensation costs for employees who test negative and can safely return to work.
Healthcare organizations should also recognize that supporting frontline professionals extends beyond infection prevention. Policies that prioritize employee health, workplace safety, and access to reliable diagnostic resources foster trust between healthcare workers and organizational leadership. When nurses feel protected and valued, they are more likely to remain engaged, resilient, and committed to delivering safe, high-quality patient care.
