Reflecting on the knowledge gained from this course and the Phase 1 activities, I have developed a deeper understanding of leadership, effective leadership practices, and mindfulness. This course provided valuable opportunities for self-reflection, allowing me to identify areas where I can improve as a leader in my hospital setting. The guidance offered has been instrumental in my professional growth, helping me become a more effective leader. One practical step I took was creating a professional LinkedIn profile, aiming to connect and network with other nurse leaders. I am grateful for learning about LinkedIn’s potential and plan to continue leveraging it as a resource.

A significant insight from this course has been the importance of therapeutic listening and communication. Enhancing these skills has improved my ability to build relationships, especially with associates who are difficult to reach. For example, when facing issues like incomplete tasks or noncompliance, I shifted my approach from asking “why” to asking “what.” Instead of questioning reasons negatively, I inquire about barriers and offer support by asking, “What are the barriers to achieving this? What can I do to help? What tools do you need?” This change has led to positive responses, enhancing both leadership effectiveness and satisfaction among associates and patients. I continue to work on active listening and mindfulness and feel confident that with the tools and resources from this course, I will master these skills.

What Have I Learned About Professional Presence?

Looking back at my Phase 1 CPE activities, I realize I have cultivated a genuine professional presence. I am now more self-aware, especially about how I communicate and how I want to be perceived by others. Throughout my nursing career, I have often been asked why I chose this profession, consistently answering, “to help people and make a difference.” However, through this course’s readings and self-reflection, I have come to understand my motivations more deeply. I have gained clarity about my strengths and weaknesses and solidified my vision for my career.

How Has Updating My LinkedIn Profile Influenced Me?

This course prompted me to update my LinkedIn profile, something I had not prioritized before. In today’s digital era, professional presence online is essential for communication, networking, and self-promotion. Updating my profile included crafting a “Summary” section, which I previously found intimidating due to insecurity and uncertainty. Reflecting honestly helped me articulate why I am a nurse, what drives my passion, and my aspirations—even during challenging times like the pandemic. Completing this profile fostered a sense of belonging within a professional online community of like-minded individuals. I am encouraged by the numerous recruiters and job opportunities available, which inspire hope for future career advancements as I near program completion.

What Are My Plans for Support and Accountability?

To ensure ongoing success, I plan to actively engage with my mentor, who offers encouragement and support. Although regular phone calls can feel daunting, I recognize their value in providing accountability and guidance. I also intend to utilize my course instructors as resources when I encounter challenges or feel uncertain about assignments.
