Summary of Findings

The selected article by Marini et al. (2023), titled “Acute heart failure: Differential diagnosis and treatment,” offers a comprehensive overview of the diagnostic challenges and evidence-based management strategies for AHF. The article is a narrative review published in the European Heart Journal Supplements, a peer-reviewed source, which enhances its credibility. This review emphasizes early diagnosis and rapid initiation of treatment in acute HF patients, highlighting the importance of diuretics (like IV furosemide), inotropes, and careful fluid and electrolyte balance. It reinforces the need for continuous cardiac monitoring in Robert Johnson, who presents with fluid overload and respiratory compromise, and is currently receiving IV Lasix, digoxin, and potassium supplementation.

In my current nursing practice, this article is highly applicable. It deepens my understanding of how to differentiate AHF from other causes of dyspnea and emphasizes the critical role of nurses in monitoring therapeutic effectiveness, detecting electrolyte imbalances, and preventing complications. The clinical insights provided support prioritizing Robert’s care, including close cardiac monitoring, strict intake/output documentation, and timely administration of potassium to prevent digoxin toxicity or arrhythmias. This article supports evidence-based decision-making in acute care settings and reinforces the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize outcomes for patients with AHF.
