Weekly Reflection: Week 1

Course: NR 327
Assignment: Weekly Reflection

1. Lessons Applicable to Other Disease Processes

During this week’s Monday simulation, Professor Peralta emphasized the importance of revisiting foundational nursing concepts as we advance in our studies. This insight is particularly useful because we now integrate previous knowledge into current practices. For example, the four key mental health concepts—appearance, behavior, cognition, and thoughts—that were previously taught during clinicals can be applied effectively to maternal and newborn care. These foundational principles serve as a cornerstone for comprehensive patient care across various disease processes.

2. Relevance and Utility of the Information

This week’s learning is relevant for three primary reasons. First, it serves as a reminder to consistently return to the basics, ensuring a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts. Second, it enables me to perform a holistic assessment of my patients, moving beyond a narrow, focused assessment. Lastly, this information allows me to provide exceptional patient care by equipping patients with knowledge about potential diseases and the signs they should monitor.

3. Challenges to My Thinking and Future Applications

Advancing through core nursing classes has presented a dual challenge of integrating previously learned material, such as the fundamentals and pathophysiology, with newly acquired knowledge. This integration can be demanding, but it also underscores the importance of retention and application in practice. Overcoming this challenge will enhance my ability to apply both foundational and advanced knowledge to complex clinical scenarios in the future.

4. Virtual Clinical Experience and Its Application to Interrelated Concepts

An essential concept I gained during my virtual clinical experience was the feedback provided by Professor Alvarado during my Foley catheter check-off. Her guidance on technique refinement will be invaluable in my clinical rotations and future nursing practice. Additionally, her lessons on recognizing allergies to iodine and shellfish through real-life scenarios emphasized the critical role of patient history and allergy assessment, reinforcing its application across interrelated nursing concepts.
