Political science is defined as “the systematic and scientific study of politics, including institutions, behaviors, and processes” (Whitman Cobb, 2020). Understanding politics through a scientific approach is crucial for students, as it involves observing, hypothesizing, analyzing, and interpreting political phenomena. These methods help individuals evaluate their political beliefs and understand their goals for their communities and country. For example, staying informed about political issues affecting minority communities has always been significant to me. Through research, I have developed hypotheses about political dynamics, even if my approach wasn’t strictly scientific. As a result, political science has become a part of my daily life, helping me navigate contemporary issues such as systemic oppression, movements for change, and political elections.
On the other hand, some students may find political science intimidating or unrelated to their interests. As Whitman Cobb (2020) notes, while some pursue political science to prepare for careers in law, politics, or the military, others may avoid it unless required, fearing they won’t enjoy it. Despite initial reservations, gaining a foundational understanding of political systems is vital. Political science provides insights into processes that affect every aspect of society. Personally, I began this course uncertain about the subject. However, I recognize its importance and hope to develop a deeper appreciation for political science as the semester progresses.

Personal Experience | Staying informed on political issues affecting minority communities has helped in forming personal political hypotheses. | Initially reluctant, acknowledges the importance of political science in everyday life. |
Challenges and Outlook | While not always adhering to scientific methods, personal research has highlighted the value of political science. | Finds political science daunting but hopes to broaden understanding during the semester. |
